This will be an ever growing tutorial on making corrections to photos. I'll post to my "What's New" listing when I add new tutorials to this page.

Correcting Dark Photos

  1. Open your photo.
  2. Right click on the layer and choose "Duplicate".

  3. Choose Colors>Negative Image on the duplicate layer.
  4. Set the Layer Blend Mode to Dodge on the negative image.

  5. Lower the opacity on the negative image layer until you have the detail you want.
  6. Merge both layers and do any necessary color adjustments.
  7. For color adjustment, right click on the merged photo layer and choose New Adjustment Layer>Color Balance.
  8. For this photo, I pulled the bottom slider towards the yellow, the middle slider towards the green and the top slider slightly towards the Cyan.
  9. Choose Image>Sharpen>Unsharp Mask if your image is a little fuzzy.

Red Eye Reduction

Well, I lied, since I could not find a photo with red-eye, I'm changing the color of a cat's eyes from green to blue. I always wanted a blue eyed cat! Anyway, the technique applies to changing any eye color.

  1. Open the graphic you want to change an eye color.
  2. Choose the Freehand Selection too and set to "Point to Point".
  3. Zoom in on the eye (this makes selecting the eye easier).
  4. Carefully click around the edges of the "red-eye" (or eye color) and double click to join your selection at the end.

  5. Choose the Retouch tool. Set the shape to round. Click on the third tab in the control palette and click on "Show Brush Outlines".
  6. Set the Retouch tool size to a size slightly larger than your eye selection.
  7. Click on the second tab in the control palette and choose "Color to Target" from the Retouch mode drop down list.
  8. Set the foreground color to an appropriate eye color.
  9. Click once on the eye selection. If you don't like your eye color, hit undo and try another. Light colors work best here.

  10. That's it, quick and easy. No loss of highlights in they eye, just a quick eye color change.
